Food Standards Agency's Board backs action to protect consumers from cockle toxin

The Board of the Food Standards Agency (FSA) yesterday (12th December 2002) agreed that the Agency should continue its precautionary approach to protecting consumers from the potential risks of a unknown toxin that is being found in cockles from beds in the Burry Inlet, Gower.

The Food Standards Agency's second annual survey of public attitudes to food safety, standards, nutrition, diet and shopping indicates that people in Wales are increasingly aware of the need to eat more vegetables, salad and fruit. The Welsh are also more likely to be regular consumers of convenience foods, eggs and dairy products than those living elsewhere in the UK.
Agency acts on products from SE Asia showing further illegal drug residues

The Food Standards Agency has received the results of tests on a number of products of animal origin from China and South East Asia. The Agency began these tests as a result of concerns about a lack of control on the use of veterinary drugs in China. The latest results show further residues of illegal and unacceptable drug residues.

The European Union (EU) has suspended imports of products of animal origin from China. This follows a European Commission (EC) inspection that identified a lack of controls on the use of veterinary drugs and other products in animals and animal products which could lead to residues and contaminants presenting a risk to public health.
