Do you know how hygienic your favourite eating house is?

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is consulting on a scheme to help consumers know at a glance how well their local takeaway or restaurant has done in food safety inspections.
Scores on the doors is a scheme whereby food businesses are given a score to show the hygiene standards found in their premises during inspections by local authority enforcement officers to check that they are complying with legal requirements. Each food outlet may display the score on its door or window so the public can clearly see how well the establishment has done. Details would also be available on the local authority’s website.
Various 'scores on the doors' schemes have been piloted across the UK including in Swansea and Wrexham. The FSA is now asking those who have trialled the scheme and others including industry and members of the public to comment on their experiences and thoughts about Scores on the Doors to help develop a UK-wide scheme.
A uniform scheme across the UK would help consumers know at a glance how well a food business has done in food safety inspections wherever they are in the UK. By extending the scheme to every area of the UK, more consumers would benefit. So far, pilot schemes have not only helped empower consumers to make informed choices about the places in which they choose to buy food, but have also encouraged food businesses to raise their hygiene standards.
