Independent panel on the controls on infant formula and follow-on formula
An independent panel has been set up to review the effect of the infant and follow-on formula controls, introduced in 2008, on how follow-on formulas are presented and advertised. The review will be carried out over a year and will begin in June 2008.
The review will examine whether, as a result of the new controls, parents/parents to be and carers are clear that the presentation of and advertisements for follow-on formula relate to formula for older babies (6 months and above) and not infant formula. The review will assess whether they are working as expected or whether further action is needed.
Background
On 21 November 2007 Public Health Minister Dawn Primorolo announced new controls on the composition, labelling, presentation, advertising and promotion of infant formula and follow-on formula which included:
- The Infant Formula and Follow-on Formula (England) Regulations 2007
- associated guidance notes
- an independently chaired review of the effect of the new measures
