Friday 7 November 2003
Category C: Action as deemed necessary
Ref: 46/2003
Heads of Environmental Health Services and Directors of Trading Standards will wish to be aware of a trade withdrawal by Lidl UK GmbH, of bottles of Australian Creston Bay Brand Cabernet Shiraz red wine due to high levels of sulphur dioxide being present.
Identification of the product
The wine is in a clear green bottle, 0.75l size, bordeaux shape, with an agglomerate cork and black plastic cap. The words 'Creston Bay' appear on the label in white set into a black background, with a picture of a kangaroo appearing immediately above. Below is a larger white label that has one red edge, with the words 'Australian' and 'Cabernet Shiraz' on it with a picture of a tree in the middle.
Only bottles with the year 2002 displayed on the rear label are covered by this warning.

Actions to be taken by local authorities
The product presents a health risk for asthmatics that may have an allergy to sulphur dioxide, as either ingestion or inhalation of the sulphur dioxide could cause an asthmatic reaction to be triggered.
It is believed that the trade withdrawal has been effective and that it is unlikely that any affected product remains on sale. However because the company have not issued any press release or point of sale notices in retail outlets, there is the possibility that unused affected product remains in consumers' homes. Local authorities are therefore asked to consider providing local publicity at the next available opportunity to this issue.
