Chilli powder imported from India containing Sudan I dye from Shaw's (Huddersfield) Ltd

On the 31 July 2003 the Agency issued a Food Hazard Warning regarding contaminated chilli powder which contained an illegal dye Sudan I.
The chilli powder was imported into the country from India and used in products produced by Shaws (Huddersfield) Ltd, Silver Street, Huddersfield.
Sudan I is not a permitted colour under the Colours in Food Regulations 1995. It is considered to be a genotoxic carcinogen and its presence, at any level, is not permitted in foodstuffs for any purpose.
Since the initial alert further information has been made available to the Food Standards Agency, which removes from suspicion certain batches of chilli powder.
Local authorities are asked to note the amendments to the detail of batches (as set out below) that remain subject to the trade withdrawal.
Batches not included within the scope of the update information panel below may be placed on the market.
