Agency approach to sustainable development in policy making

The Food Standards Agency's draft approach to sustainable development in policy making interprets and refines the Government's sustainable development principles in the light of the Agency's statutory remit. Application of the approach will be fundamental in further embedding sustainability within the Agency's policy making.

Key features of the draft approach
- working within our statutory remit whilst recognising the importance of all aspects of sustainable development
- assessing the sustainability of new and amending policies on a case by case basis
- ensuring our primary objectives of food safety and nutrition are achieved whilst maximising positive impacts in all areas of sustainable development
- taking responsibility for minimising significant negative impacts of our policies
- recognising the need to work in partnership with other Government departments and others to deliver sustainable policies
Purpose
The Agency is committed to taking sustainable development into account in all of its activities and policy decisions. The purpose of this consultation is to seek stakeholder comments on the draft Agency approach to put this into practice.

This consultation has been prepared in accordance with the Better Regulation Executive's Code of Practice on Consultation, which states that a consultation must follow better regulation best practice, including carrying out an Impact Assessment (Regulatory Impact Assessment in Scotland). The assessment is included in the consultation documents.
