The controls should be kept in place and if anything tightened. Paragraph 46. states that "a relaxation of intestine and thymus of cattle of six months old or under and heads of sheep" etc., is being introduced in October 2000. This is surprising as it has not been proved beyond doubt that the feeding of meet products to herbivores is not the cause of the disease. The press made mention recently of an increase of the incidence of BSE in cattle over resent months in the UK. The possible cause was mentioned as the feeding of blood products to cattle. There is no mention in this report of this trend. It is somewhat alarming, if the reports are accurate, that blood was not included as a banned feed substance at the time of the banning of feeding of meet products to ruminants.
