Para 37 As the mininum infective dose is as yet unknown it is possible that it is below the level at which we can test for. So whilst there have been 3 clinically identified cases in cattle aged 30 months or less is it possible there have been sub clinical cases?
Para 43 the OTM rule should be kept as cattle born after 1996 have shown symptoms. Even if the number of cattle born after 1 Aug 1996 is in line with predicted levels therule if kept will increase public safety.
Para 51 what does this mean with respect to numbers of carcassess entering the food chain? 99.4% compliance could still mean 1000's of carcasses entering the food chain?
Para 59 states that recycling of animal material within a single species is unwise but as we don't know all the information yet is it wise to give pig MBM to poultry (para 60) which relates to intraspecies recycling? Could this be storing up future problems?
Para 61 refers to tallow being subjected to treatment to render it inert to be used for car tyres etc. Since pressure cooking (Para 62) dosnot kill the infective agent can we be sure that this other process will? Is there an aerosol risk when tyres/paint/plastics are later burnt or recycled?
Para 68 relates to concern regrding meat from abroad. The press hav commented many times on under reporting in other countries could meat be labelled to allow the consumer to make an "informed" choice on whether to buy or not?
Para 75 should keep OTM rule.
Para 76 feed ban should be kept.
Para 78 further research into screening tests particularly for pre-clinical diagnosis needed.ld be kept as cattle born after 1996 have shown symptoms. Even if the number of cattle born after 1 Aug 1996 is in line with predicted levels therule if kept will increase public safety.
