Food Standards Agency Board Member
CHRIS POMFRET brings over 30 years of experience in the Food industry to the FSA Board. He has a profound knowledge of the sector, having worked for Unilever, primarily in Frozen Foods and Ice Cream, since 1971 in the UK, Trinidad, Brazil, France and the Netherlands. Over this period, Chris has held a number of positions largely in marketing and general management. From 1990 to 1997 he was based at the Unilever Corporate Centre in the Netherlands and was responsible for global and European regional ice cream strategy.
In 1997, Chris returned to the UK and became Business Director Frozen Foods, in Birds Eye Walls, responsibility for Unilever's 750 million UK frozen foods business.
This role incorporated Marketing Director and International Brand Director for the Captain (Birds Eye) brand across Europe. From 1999 to 2003 he was a Council member of the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers.
In 2003, Chris returned to the Corporate Centre, this time in London, to take up a senior role developing Unilever's strategy in the area of Sustainability with particular emphasis on sustainability and marketing reporting to the Corporate Development Director.
Chris left Unilever in November 2004, in order to pursue a number of interests in particular Sustainability, Marketing and business. He is a member of the Corporate Advisory Board and Senior Associate of the University of Cambridge Programme for Industry and was a member of the Government Roundtable on Sustainable Consumption, which reported in April 2006. In 2007 he was appointed to the Expert Panel advising the Cabinet Office on its review of Food Policy. The Report, Food Matters, was published in early 2008. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of CHASE, a southern England charity devoted to community and hospice care for life limited children and runs his own Marketing and Sustainability consultancy. He is a member of the Association of British Insurers Customer Impact Committee.
Chris has a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree in Accountancy and Commerce from Southampton University, lives in Cornwall, is married and has three children
